Dr. Lower\u2019s latest book,\u00a0The\u00a0Ravine: A Family, a Photograph, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed<\/i><\/a>, investigates a single photograph\u2014a rare \u201caction shot\u201d documenting the horrific final moment of a family\u2019s murder in Ukraine. Through years of forensic and archival research, Lower sought to uncover the identities of the photographed and in the process recovered new details about the Nazis\u2019 Holocaust by Bullets in eastern Europe, the role of the family unit in Nazi ideology, and a rare case of rescue and postwar justice.<\/p>\n

Wendy\u00a0Lower<\/strong>\u00a0is the John K. Roth Professor\u00a0of\u00a0History at Claremont McKenna College. She chairs\u00a0the\u00a0Academic\u00a0Committee\u00a0of\u00a0the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\"Headshot and has published several books on the Holocaust in Ukraine including\u00a0Nazi Empire-Building and the Holocaust in Ukraine<\/i>\u00a0(2005),\u00a0and\u00a0co- editor\u00a0(with Ray Brandon)\u00a0of\u00a0Shoah in Ukraine: History, Testimony, Memorialization<\/i> (2008). Her work on\u00a0gender and the Holocaust,\u00a0Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields<\/i>\u00a0(2013) was a finalist for the National Book Award and has been translated into 23 languages. Lower’s\u00a0The\u00a0Ravine: A Family, A Photograph, A Holocaust Massacre Revealed<\/i>\u00a0(2021) received the National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category and was shortlisted for the Wingate\u00a0Prize,\u00a0 and longlisted for a PEN.\u00a0Lower just co-authored with Jonathan Petropoulos,\u00a0Himmler\u2019s Last Days: The End of Nazi Terror<\/i>, appearing in 2027 with Mariner Books.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>An<\/em>\u00a0exhibition commemorating the “Holocaust by Bullets” and its more than two million victims.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Landscape of our Memory <\/i><\/strong>is a haunting and original exhibition by Prague artists Gabriela Bulisova and Mark Isaac. It is part of a long-term project that addresses the \u201cHolocaust by bullets\u201d by commemorating the more than 2 million people who were murdered in or near their hometowns rather than in death camps. As every technique is rooted in the landscape, the project has an environmental sensibility that suggests a relationship between genocide and ecocide. (More on the artists’ website<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Gabriela Buli\u0161ov\u00e1 and Mark Isaac are multidisciplinary artists who collaborate on intimate projects designed to bridge the gap between fine art and documentary practices.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Their work includes still photography, video, writing, music and installation focused on the climate crisis, diversity, memory, trauma and reconciliation. Their commitment to these issues is fed by a passion to engender meaningful changes in policy. Among other awards, they have received four Fulbright grants to create projects on socially conscious issues around the world. Their diverse, in-depth projects have been exhibited in Canada, Cyprus, Finland, Siberia, Slovakia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Ukraine. Their writing, photographs, and video have also been published by The Daily Beast, Politico.eu, Smithsonian Magazine; National Geographic, ORF (Austrian television), and Narratively.
